With every season change, I brace myself for the return of a decade I without a doubt thought would remain in the vault. And with every season, I'm a bit taken aback by the new trend. Perhaps it takes a breath or two to determine how I'll sport the new look, what variations to make and what I can and cannot pull off.
That's the appeal of fashion – new challenges and purchases.
So what's new for this year? The up and coming has hit. Skinny jeans.
Last season, women returned to sporting leggings and tights, and this fall designers are taking it a step further with skin-tight jeans in several colors: blue, black, green, gray, etc. Yes, even black jeans are back in stores. Mall retailers like Gap and Urban Outfitters are already stocking these painted on numbers and hipsters are tearing them off the racks. What does one wear with a pair of skinny jeans though? The fashion experts are showing long knits, shirt dresses, plaids and oversized belts. It's 2006's take on the styles of the 1980s.
And for shoes? Platform heels or flats. These jeans are versatile little numbers.
Other jean cuts are as hot as ever with millions of dollars continuously funneled into this high-end industry. However, slimmer fits are in for fall. The days of the large flare leg just may be behind us. And the same goes for men. Baggy is out, my friend.
Retailers are showing slim fit jeans for men. Some of the more daring fellas are even taking a stab at the skinny jean. But that's more suited for the indie rock-scene stage than the runway. Other big hits for men include track jackets, stylish sneakers, one-button suits, flannels and military jackets. Sport coats are still a favorite as well paired with jeans for a casual yet stylish look.
The name of the game for fall is form-fitting clothing with the occasional bubble skirt and oversized knit. A new piece here and there will spice up any wardrobe while staying true to timeless basic t-shirts and jeans already tucked away in the closet from years past. Large jewelry and handbags are also still big this year with a return to gold and solid colored leather respectively.
But as with any season, it's all about personal variation and originality. Fashion is as a means of expression worldwide and it doesn't stop at the discount rack or high-end department store. Every piece of clothing is another tacit expression. Leave it open to interpretation. Just keep building your own personal style using the new tools the industry provides. This season is providing quite a bit to choose from.
