Winter Fashion Trends

You do not have to put away all your fall fashions when the weather turns wintry. Though new trends are only shown in the spring and fall seasons, you can still be fashionable when the temperature gets chilly.
During the cold winter season, get fashionable with coats in voluminous new shapes, pants in new fabrics and prints, and create a new neutral palette.
Layering
This trend from the 1980s has been resurrected. Thankfully, layering in the cold winter months serves two purposes – to keep you warm and to keep you fashionable.
The key to layering is to keep each layer smooth so as not to create a bulky silhouette. Try the new layering looks with a pair of black leggings paired with a chunky-knit cardigan in a deep jewel tone with a black long-sleeve shirt underneath. Pull the look together with a pair of flats and gold chain-link necklace (also hot this season) to accent. If you want to go for something a bit more sophisticated, try a vest over a crisp white tunic (a must-have for any season) with voluminous sleeves and a pair of skinny black pants.
Volume
Contrary to the idea of smooth layering is the sheer volume of this season’s new dresses, shirts and coats. The cocoon shape from the 1960s is back this season and has shown up in shrugs, coats and skirts. To look good in the cocoon shape, it helps to be on the narrow side. When wearing a voluminous coat or top, you may want to bring out your skinny black pants and fitted top.
Bubble skirts from last spring are still in fashion, however, rather than keen-length, the shape often comes in mini- or maxi-length. To pull off the bubble silhouette, pair a short skirt with a slim top and chunky heels. To keep your shape from looking ridiculous, stick to neutral colors like black and gray. If you are tall, you can pull off a longer bubble-shaped dress with flats.
Coats
Thankfully, designers know fashion infiltrates every layer of clothing, including outwear. And what better way to declare you fashion abilities than with your outermost layer? From lightweight trench coats to the tailored blazers of the menswear silhouette, coats are the easiest way to make a fashion statement. Oversize trapeze coats look great over skinny jeans – try it in a neutral color or go bold and wear tartan or plaid (both great prints to wear this season). If menswear is more your style, you can wear a blazer with a cashmere scarf or a fur-lined, floor-length coat.
Plaid
If you still have the plaid skirt from your days as a Catholic school girl, take it out of our closet and dust away the mothballs because this look is back. It is not just school girl kilts rocking the look – pretty much everything has been branded with some sort of heritage plaid. Handbags, shoes and hats have even been branded by the heritage print.
As with any print, however, do not overuse plaid, especially if you are not actually a Scotsman. Instead, wear it as an accent piece. For instance, top a classic black shift with a plaid or houndstooth trench coat, or wear your old plaid kilt with a gray or beige cardigan and platform loafers. Remember, you are going for a womanly – not girly – look.
