Spring Fashion Trends

Published: October 11, 2006

Before layers of snow have the chance to accumulate on the streets of Manhattan, designers were already showcasing new designs for spring 2007.

Spring fashion usually defies winter’s somewhat neutral palette and masculine silhouettes. This spring will be no different.

White Dresses

Your always trustworthy, always forgiving little black dress will have some company in your closet this spring. Last season saw an emergence of white pantsuits, linen, sandals and jackets. Everything was light and free-flowing. This season, however, you can add the little white dress to your ‘to-buy' list for the spring.

Not all of the white dresses premiered this season are sweet and pure. Many designers experimented with opaqueness, detail and shape. A crisp white shirtdress looks great cinched at the waist with a brown leather belt, while a sheer chiffon dress borders the line between sweet and sexy. Also, play with unique shapes. You will find the trapeze shape stripped down for spring.

Graphic Attack

It looks like black and white will be cohabitating this spring, thanks to bold black and white motifs. This look is much softer than the fall season’s black and white theme, which focused on lines. Instead, you will find bountiful skirts and dresses in soft fabrics incorporating floral motifs.

Volume

There will be plenty of volume to play with come spring. The heavy shapes of fall and winter – the bell and tulip –will still be popular, though they will be obscured by a new trend. Spring's voluminous shapes are light and sheer, almost ethereal. The volume has lightened up thanks to the use of diaphanous materials like chiffon, satin and lace.

Spring focuses on voluminous materials which drape – rather than encase – the body. Expect to see little white dresses paired with platform wedges, or dress down with muted sandals and bubble skirts of all lengths. Shirts and tops with voluminous sleeves look great with mini skirts. If the volume is a little too much for you, just cinch the waist in with a nice belt or sash.

Blues and Yellows

Spring always marks the return of some long-lost color and this year will be no different. Designers showcased their designs in these happening new hues. And since there will be clothing in all shades and tints of blue and yellow, anyone can wear them. Blue is a relatively easy color for anyone to pull off; you can wear navy as your new favorite neutral, or you can go for jewel tones like sapphire. Yellow, however is not so easy. Wear too much of it and you will bear a striking resemblance to Big Bird. Yellow looks best on bronzed, warm skin; do not even think of wearing yellow if you are still pale from this winter.
