Shopping For Fall

Published: October 10, 2006

Fall is finally here and it is time to fall back on the plethora of fashion trends available this season.

Though the weather is cooling off and the days are getting shorter, the list of fashion trends this season is long enough to last until spring. The great thing about fall fashion is that it acts as a transition between summer and winter fashions. You can buy a few trendy items and wear them with both your summer and winter clothes.

When shopping for fall, do not spend your entire paycheck on every trend. Instead, buy a few new pieces of clothing and accessorize. The following list describes this fall's fashion trends. Combine these trends with clothing already in your wardrobe.

Skinny Black Pants

This fashion trend announced its onset when leggings became a fashion staple in the spring. Skinny black pants are not just for women with mile-high, pin-thin legs either. If you, the average American woman, have been looking to get in on this new fashion staple, fret no more; there are plenty of cuts to suit you. For instance, if you are hippy, try a black pant with a boot-cut leg and curvy thighs. Though they are not exactly the skinny pant, you can still mimic the look. If you are on the shorter side, pair these pants with chunky black heels or a tall black boot to lengthen the leg. If you are tall and slender, you can wear these with flats and a black turtleneck, like Funny Face herself, Audrey Hepburn. Or you can try pairing them with a billowy or voluminous top to balance your silhouette, adding heels for extra height.

Menswear

In the 1940s and 1950s, another famous Hepburn – Kate – donned the silver screen in men's trousers and tweed coats. Designers are once again embracing the menswear trend with a host of tweeds, herringbone and pinstripes. Though these are not straight-up men's clothes like Kate wore, they are inspired by menswear and cut to complement the female form. To soften the look, pair your favorite herringbone suit with a frilly blouse, or tweed pants with a soft cashmere sweater. Trousers and pencil skirts alike look great with a pair of platform Oxfords or loafers.

Red

Red is the new black; the right shade of red can be worn with just about anything. Be bold and wear platform patent leather heels in crimson, or go for subtlety and wear a pair of suede ballet flats. Wear red to colorize the normally somber palette of fall and winter fashions. For instance, a gray or navy cable-knit sweater and matching trousers looks fresh with a skinny red leather belt and cherry-red sunglasses. Just be sure not to wear red all over, unless you want someone to mistake you for the Kool-Aid Man. Red is not the only bold fashion choice this season; there are a few other deep shades you can wear, including chocolate brown and sapphire blue.

Leopard and Lippi

True, both are cats, but they also are two hot new prints for fall. Just about everything comes with leopard or Lippi print – handbags, skirts, jackets, cardigans and shoes. These prints are great because a little goes a long way. Unless you are truly brave and do not mind dressing in head-to-toe cat print, use these patterns to accent your wardrobe. Wear a leopard cardigan with a skinny black belt and skinny black pant, or go monochromatic and wear the print on your feet. Silk and chiffon blouses bear the print while retaining their feminine appeal because of the material's softness.

Peep-Toes, Platforms and Boots

Who can resist a sexy platform pump with a sliver of toe peeking out? Peep-toes are a prevalent trend this fall on everything from pumps to sling-backs to flats. Platforms are more subdued than the egregious wedge from the spring, but they are just as sexy.

As for boots, riding boots are a closet staple from last fall. Ankle boots pair well with this season's skinny black pants or leggings. Platform boots look just as good over a pair of jeans as they do underneath a skirt.
