New York, Paris and Milan fashion have dominated the world's definition of fashion for decades. However, the world is starting to take notice of Indian fashion and the up and coming Indian fashion designers. Indian fashion used to be predictable, consisting of cottons with traditional embroidered patterns, tie dye, bead work, and mirrors.
Today, ground breaking Indian fashion designers such as Naeem Khan, Shelley Chhabra, Ashish Soni and Manish Arora are turning heads world wide. These Indian fashion designers are proving that Indian fashion is growing and becoming more than just a trend.
Indian fashion designer Naeem Khan comes from a long line of Indian designers. He dresses the world's most glamorous women, particularly specializing in flawlessly crafted cocktail dresses, evening gowns, and separates. Khan is acquiring quite a following with his intricate details, clean lines, flowing luxurious fabrics, and classic designs. His brand continues to gain world wide exposure as a showcase at New York Fashion Week and also as a bestseller at Niemen Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Shelley Chhabra, a second generation Indian, launched her first Indian bridal fashion line in February 2006. After getting married in the U.S. herself, she realized the huge demand for a more diverse and high quality Indian bridal fashion. Chhabra's dress collection is not only a fusion between traditional and modern Indian bridal fashion, but also a fusion of American and India wedding fashion. Chhabra also creates bridal accessories such as gorgeous beaded clutches. Her Indian bridal collection serves a huge population of Indian Americans who want to satisfy both cultural identities. Additionally, this fall she produced a crossover evening wear line.
Ashish N Soni is somewhat of the It designer among the latest Indian fashion. He was the first Indian designer invited to show at New York fashion week. His designs do not have blatant Indian references. Instead, he says that the global fashion world is eager to see what Indian designers have to offer that is not overtly Indian. Ashish's line this season is high fashion featuring clean lines, subdued colors, and modern cuts. Soni's latest Indian fashion project is an interesting collection inspired by Nokia handsets, demonstrating how fashion and technology collide in real life.
Manish Arora, arguably the most celebrated Indian fashion designer, is making a name on the global platform. Unlike Soni or Khan, Arora uses many Indian inspired designs and colors in a playful and slightly wacky way. His off beat interpretation of fashion has captured headlines everywhere he goes. Arora is said to turn to the streets for inspiration. His designs do not cater to the elite, but reach out to the youthful, spirited, and funky. His clothes sometimes have bohemian flair featuring flowers, and always have a sense of humor. Currently, Arora is designing a shoe line for Reebok, which will no doubt reflect his eclectic and sporty nature.
Over the years the world had bought countless Indian textile products with no specific designer's name attached. The latest Indian fashion designers are a testament that this is changing. Indian fashion is being redefined as Indian fashion designers continue to create beyond their cultural heritage and change what Indian fashion means.
